What to Wear in Key West: Swimsuits
Let’s start with the most important: swimsuits! You’ll probably spend most of your time in one, so you’ll want to bring a few options. I recommend packing a couple different styles — one for lounging poolside and one for water activities like kayaking, fishing or paddleboarding. Key West has plenty of opportunities to swim, snorkel, or relax by the water, so having a rotation of swimsuits is always a good idea.

I’m loving these swimsuits from Montce– they’re cute, super comfortable, and perfect for lounging in the sun all day.
This bikini from Monday Swimwear is flattering, comfortable and perfect for hanging in the sun.
These Beach Riot swimsuit are perfect for any watersport- they will stay put whether you’re paddle boarding or snorkeling.
What to Wear in Key West: Cover Ups
A swimsuit cover up is a must-have. Whether you’re grabbing lunch at a beachfront café or exploring the shops around town, a cute cover up will keep you feeling comfortable and put together. Some can even double as dresses, making them versatile for a casual dinner or a sunset cocktail hour.
What to Wear in Key West for Dinner
Pack a few outfits that are light and flowy. Dresses made from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen are a great choice. They’re comfortable, stylish, and easy to dress up or down. A flowy maxi dress can be perfect for a sunset dinner, while a simple sundress works well for a casual evening out. Rompers and matching sets are also fun options if you want something different. Add a pair of flat sandals and a little jewelry, and you’re good to go!
What to Wear in Key West: Hats
Whether you’re lounging on the beach or heading out with no time to spare, a stylish hat is the ultimate accessory. It’s the perfect way to protect your face from the sun and look effortlessly put together. Below are some of my favorites!
Beach Bags and Purses
Don’t overlook accessories! A large, stylish beach bag is essential for carrying sunscreen, towels, and other beach essentials. For dinner or a night out, a woven smaller purse will keep things simple and chic without feeling too formal.
Key West Essentials
- Sandals: I’d skip the heels and stick to flats — they’re much more practical for the laid-back vibe. If you must have some sort of heel, wedges are your best bet.
- Light Sweater: Bring one just in case there’s a cool night. It’s especially useful in the winter months.
- Water Shoes: If you’re planning on water activities or going in the ocean, water shoes are a must. The beaches in Key West aren’t the powdery sand you might be used to — they tend to be a bit rocky.
- Sunglasses: Is an explanation even needed for these? The sun is intense, so don’t forget a pair (or two!).
- Sunscreen: The sun is strong here, so don’t forget a good sunscreen. Opt for a reef-safe option if you plan on spending time in the water.
- Sneakers: A comfortable pair of sneakers is great for walking tours, biking around town, or any other activities where you’ll be on your feet for a while.
Overall, the Keys are laid-back. Even at nicer restaurants, resort-casual is usually the way to go. A breezy dress or a cute coverup over your swimsuit will usually work just fine. With these essentials in your suitcase, you’ll have everything you need to know about what to wear in Key West to enjoy your trip in comfort and style. Happy packing!
