Best Time to Visit Charleston
The best time to visit Charleston is between March-May and September-November, with temperatures in the 70s to low 80s. Just keep in mind, hotel prices are at their highest during these months, and fall is also hurricane season. December through February offers cooler weather, with highs in the low 60s, while summer can be hot, with temperatures reaching the upper 80s.
Getting Around Charleston
Charleston is one of those cities where renting a car isn’t necessary. Even if you want to check out nearby islands like Sullivan’s Island or Isle of Palms, you can easily take an Uber or Lyft. The city is incredibly walkable, so exploring on foot is easy. Plus, many hotels offer bikes, which is a fun and convenient way to get around town.

The Best Hotels in Charleston
Hotels in Charleston can get pricey, so if you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, I recommend staying in Mount Pleasant. The rates are much more affordable, and you’re only about a 10-minute drive from all the action in downtown Charleston.
One great spot to check out is Hotel Indigo. The rooms are updated and stylish, there’s a pool to relax by, and it’s just a five-minute drive to Shem Creek, which is a great spot for dining and water views—you may even see a pod of dolphins swim by.
If you want to stay closer to the action, these are my favorite mid-range and luxury hotels in Charleston. They are all within walking distance of the best restaurants, shops, and things to do.
Mid-Range Hotels
The Palmetto
The Palmetto Hotel in Charleston blends Southern charm with modern style. The rooms are cozy and stylish, and there’s a pretty bar for drinks in the evening. Plus, their continental breakfast is a great way to start your day. It’s a perfect mix of comfort and charm. I can’t wait to stay here again!

Emeline
Emeline is an excellent hotel with stylish and cozy rooms. It also has a trendy bar and restaurant, Frannie and the Fox, where you can enjoy fantastic craft cocktails. Their outdoor fireplace is the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring or have a pre-dinner drink.
Maven Tip: Be sure to request a renovated room. We first stayed in the older part of the hotel, and the bathroom was less than ideal. But once we moved to the renovated section, the entire room was great!
Luxury Hotels
The Dewberry
The Dewberry has a sleek mid-century vibe with a modern twist. The rooftop bar, The Citrus Club, has amazing views and is perfect for drinks. The Living Room downstairs is cozy and inviting, ideal for relaxing. It’s a stylish hotel that combines comfort with great design.

Hotel Bennett
Hotel Bennett exudes luxury, with beautifully designed rooms and exceptional service. The hotel has a chic rooftop bar with stunning views and a glamorous champagne room. It’s the ideal spot for a truly upscale and memorable stay.

The Best Restaurants in Charleston
Oak Steakhouse
Oak Steakhouse has a classic, traditional steakhouse vibe. The wedge salad here is my favorite—honestly, the bacon is the best I’ve ever had. Every time I’ve been there, the restaurant is full of regulars who know the staff, which gives it such a welcoming neighborhood feel.
Felix
Felix is a lively French spot with a fun, upbeat atmosphere. The burger and fries are delicious. It’s a popular place that’s perfect for a lively night out.

Sorelle
Sorelle is a beautiful, upscale Italian restaurant with white marble and velvet chairs—honestly, one of the prettiest spots in Charleston. The food is good, though I’m not blown away by it. That said, I’d definitely return for the atmosphere and the overall vibe.
167 Raw Oyster Bar
167 Raw Oyster Bar is one of my favorite spots in Charleston. The nautical vibe is super cute, and the food never disappoints. I love the pastrami’d swordfish sandwich, the tuna burger, and, of course, the oysters. Our bartender (who was fantastic) recommended the Oysters French, which has caviar and creme fraiche, and honestly, it might just be the best oyster topping I’ve tried. There’s usually a wait since they don’t take reservations, so put your name in and then head around the corner to Bar 167 for a drink while you wait for your table.
Leon’s
Leon’s is a cool spot in an old garage with a laid-back vibe. The fried chicken is fantastic, and the hush puppies, oysters, and frozen gin and tonic are all must-tries. It’s a popular place, so expect a wait, but it’s definitely worth it!

Melfi’s
Melfi’s is a stylish Italian restaurant with a great vibe. You really can’t go wrong with any pasta, but I’m a fan of the spicy Caesar salad and the prosciutto and burrata. It’s a fantastic spot for a relaxed yet elevated meal.
Husk
Husk didn’t blow me away, but it’s one of those places that everyone seems to rave about, so I wanted to mention it. The food was a bit bland, but the atmosphere was beautiful. It’s a popular spot, so definitely make a reservation in advance.

Best Spots for Cocktails
Henry’s
Henry’s is so much fun and one of my favorite spots in Charleston. If you’re in town with a group or planning a bachelorette party, it’s a must! They have multiple levels, each offering its own vibe and live music – everything from acoustic to country hits to Motown. There’s something for everyone, and the entire place is energetic!
The Living Room
The Living Room at The Dewberry has a laid-back, mid-century vibe—nothing overly exciting, but the perfect spot to relax and unwind. It’s cozy and quiet, ideal for good conversation. Plus, the dirty martini I had was delicious.

Citrus Club
The Citrus Club at The Dewberry is a pretty rooftop bar. The drinks are good, and the views are definitely worth it. It’s a relaxed spot to enjoy a cocktail and take in the scenery.
The Rooftop at The Vendue
I’m adding The Rooftop at The Vendue to my list because it’s one of those spots everyone loves, but honestly, it’s just okay. I enjoy spending time up there on a sunny day—it’s got a nice vibe—but I wouldn’t say the views or cocktails are anything to write home about. That said, if you’re looking for a casual spot to enjoy an appetizer and a drink (I’d recommend sticking to something simple, like an Aperol Spritz), it could be a nice choice on a beautiful day.
The Gin Joint
The Gin Joint isn’t just for gin lovers—it’s a must-visit for craft cocktail enthusiasts. They have an amazing selection; if you’re unsure what to order, the bartenders will help you create the perfect drink. The atmosphere is dark, warm, and cozy.
Bar 167
Bar 167, just around the corner from 167 Raw, is the perfect spot to grab a drink while you wait for your table—or, honestly, it’s good enough to be its own destination. With fantastic outdoor seating, nautical décor, and a Mediterranean-inspired menu, it’s a relaxed yet vibrant place to enjoy a drink and snacks.
Husk Bar
If you’re dining at Husk, swing by Husk Bar before or after your meal. It’s located in a charming old kitchen house dating back to the 1890s and is the perfect spot to enjoy a craft cocktail.
Doar Bros.
I didn’t make it over to Doar Bros. this time, but every local and bartender I talked to says it’s a must for craft cocktails. It’s definitely on my list for next time!
Best Things to Do
Walk The Battery
The Battery is a scenic seawall and promenade, perfect for a leisurely walk. It’s a great spot to take in Charleston’s historic homes while enjoying views of the harbor.

Shopping
If you love to shop, Charleston won’t disappoint. While King Street is famous for its variety of shops, I actually found some of the best boutiques tucked just off the main road.
City Market
City Market is not my scene—it felt a bit touristy—but locals do recommend it, so I thought I’d mention it. This four-block market is over 200 years old and definitely has some historical charm, even if it’s a bit commercial.
Architectural Tour
One of the things I love most about Charleston is its incredible architecture. It’s one of the oldest cities in the U.S., so the buildings have so much history. I’ve never done a tour, but it’s definitely on my list for next time!
Shem Creek
Shem Creek is a must-do! Just a 10-minute drive from downtown Charleston, Shem Creek is lined with great spots to eat and drink, all offering waterfront views. Saltwater Cowboys (get the Trash Can Nachos) and Red’s are my favorite. You can also stroll along the waterfront boardwalks or rent kayaks and paddleboards for a fun way to explore.

Farmer’s Market
Held in Marion Square, Charleston farmer’s market is a great spot to check out local vendors and grab some delicious food. It’s open seasonally, so be sure to swing by if you’re in town during the right time of year!
Visit Sullivan’s Island
A 15-minute drive from downtown Charleston, Sullivan’s Island is the perfect beach getaway. You’ll find great restaurants, cute shops, and a fantastic beach. You can rent bikes to cruise around the island and even head up to Isle of Palms for more coastal vibes.

From its stunning architecture and delicious food to its welcoming atmosphere, Charleston is the perfect place for a getaway. I hope this guide helps you navigate the best spots and hidden gems.
