Key West, an island with charm, history, and stunning views, offers a lively destination perfect for exploring in just one day. If you’re limited on time, this One Day in Key West itinerary will help you make the most of your visit, ensuring you experience the best of what Key West has to offer.
Morning: Breakfast and Strolling Duval Street
Start your day with breakfast at either Cuban Coffee Queen or Blue Heaven. If you’re in the mood for a classic Key West experience, head to Cuban Coffee Queen for a strong cup of Cuban coffee and one of their famous breakfast sandwiches.
Blue Heaven offers a laid-back setting with acoustic live music and roosters roaming the outdoor seating area, creating the perfect atmosphere for enjoying their signature lobster Benedict. If there is a wait for a table, I like to grab a mimosa and listen to the music.
After breakfast, make your way to Duval Street, the heart of Key West. As you stroll, explore this lively street’s unique shops, art galleries, and boutiques. Along the way, you’ll hear live music spilling out from the bars- stop and listen for a bit- this is one of my favorite things to do in Key West.
For a quick detour, visit the Key West Lighthouse for panoramic views of the island. It’s a short walk from Duval Street and offers a great vantage point from which to see the city from above.
If you’re a history buff, consider touring the Ernest Hemmingway Home and Museum to learn about the author’s life and connection to Key West.
Afternoon: Lunch at Seaside Cafe at the Mansion on the Sea
Head to the Seaside Cafe at the Mansion on the Sea for lunch. This outdoor cafe offers views of the ocean and a menu featuring, salads, sandwiches and their signature honey-butter lobster biscuits and lobster pizza. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Key West and I always come here a few times during my visit to get their mojito and conch fritters.
On your way to the Seaside Cafe, continue exploring Duval Street, popping into any shops that catch your eye. My favorite boutiques are The Green Pineapple and Shaddow and Fish.
After lunch, head to the small beach next to the cafe to relax. You can also grab a drink from Seaside Cafe to have at the beach.
Evening: Dinner at Louie’s Backyard and Live Music
Go to Louie’s Backyard for dinner (reservations are recommended). This iconic Key West restaurant offers a romantic setting with oceanfront dining and a menu that features fresh, local ingredients. Whether you choose a seafood dish or one of their other specialties, you’re in for a memorable dinner with a view. If you have time before your table is ready, have a glass of wine on their lower deck right over the water.
After dinner, keep the night going by heading to Hank’s Hair of the Dog Saloon for some live music. This laid-back bar is one of my favorites and has a fun and relaxed atmosphere where you can enjoy great music and unwind.
Accommodations: Southermost Beach Resort
If you’re staying overnight, consider booking a room at the Southernmost Beach Resort. This oceanfront hotel is close to all the action but far enough away to have a peaceful night. Its beachfront location and luxurious amenities make it the ideal place to stay.
