Kennebunkport, often described as a “Hallmark town,” truly lives up to that charming reputation. It is located on Maine’s southern coast and offers a blend of quaint New England charm and coastal beauty. The town is perfect for a leisurely weekend of exploring and offers a mix of boutiques, art galleries, water activities, and restaurants where you can enjoy fresh, local seafood.

The Best Time to Visit Kennebunkport
We traveled to Kennebunkport in July, and it was hot! The temperatures were consistently between 80 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit each day, which is a bit higher than the typical mid-70s summer averages. Despite being peak season, we didn’t feel overwhelmed by the crowds and had no trouble finding a spot at a restaurant or place to get a drink. If you’re planning a trip, June through September is the perfect time to visit.
Visiting in March-May or October-November offers a more budget-friendly option. The temperatures during these times range from the mid-40s to the 50s, and while it’s a bit cooler, not all the shops and restaurants may be open for business.
How to Get to Kennebunkport
When planning a trip to Kennebunkport, you’ll have two airport options: Boston Logan International Airport and Portland International Jetport. The Logan Airport is approximately a 90-minute drive to Kennebunkport, while Portland Airport is only a 30-minute drive. When I went in July, I found that airline tickets to Portland were significantly more expensive than flying into Boston.
If you choose to drive in from Boston, you’ll have the opportunity to explore several coastal towns on your way to Kennebunkport. We stopped for lunch at Frisbee’s Wharf in Kittery, a perfect start to kick off our Maine vacation. The towns of York and Ogunquit are also worth exploring.
We flew into Boston and spent one night before driving to Maine. Looking back, I would choose to fly directly into Portland. While I love Boston, I would have enjoyed spending more time in Maine. Portland is a charming, walkable town with endless restaurant options and water activities, making it an ideal starting point for a Maine experience.

Getting Around Kennebunkport
We rented a car, which was needed for certain restaurants like The Lost Fire and those in Cape Porpoise, but overall, Kennebunkport is a very walkable town. If you plan on venturing outside of downtown, a rental car is ideal, as I could not find any Uber or Lyfts readily available. Biking is also a good option for exploring, and many hotels offer bikes to their guests.
If you plan on renting bikes, there are two options in town:
Half day bike rental (4 hours): $29/adult
Full day rental (24 hours): $39/adult
Half-day bike rental (4 hours): $34/adult
Full day bike rental (24 hours): $42/adult
There are also multiday rental options available
Kennebunkport Travel Tips
Explore Beyond Downtown and Dock Square
While Dock Square is charming, I highly recommend visiting Cape Porpoise for a quieter vibe and harbor views.
Book Accommodations Early
Hotels and rentals fill up quickly, especially during peak season. Booking ahead ensures you get your preferred spot.
Bring Layers
Even in summer, evenings can be chilly by the coast, so pack some layers.
Try the Seafood
Don’t miss the fresh lobster rolls, clam chowder, and other local seafood. Many restaurants offer outdoor seating with beautiful views.
Enjoy Water Activities
Whether it’s kayaking, sailing, or a lobster boat tour, getting out on the water is a must.
Take a Scenic Drive
Ocean Avenue offers coastline views and historic homes, including the Bush family compound.
Best Things to Do in Kennebunkport
Explore Downtown and Dock Square:
The heart of Kennebunkport, Dock Square is full of shops, boutiques, and restaurants. My favorite boutiques to shop at were 173 Mercantile and Bliss.
Lobster Cruise
A lobster cruise offers a unique look at Maine’s iconic lobster industry. As you set out on Maine’s coastland in a working lobster boat, you can sit back and relax while the crew pulls traps from the ocean or get hands-on and help with the process. It’s an educational and picturesque experience all in one.
- Rugosa Lobster Tour: Located in Kennebunkport, the Coastal Lobster Tour offers a 75-minute cruise starting at $49 per person. A private charter is available for $900.
- Lucky Catch Cruises: Located in Portland, the cruise offers an 80-90 minute excursion for $50 per person. A private chart is available for $500.
Visit a Lighthouse
Visiting at least one lighthouse is a must during your time in Kennebunkport. Touring by bike or boat is a great way to explore the iconic lighthouses scattered along the coast.
Lighthouse Bikes has 2 hour, 3 hour and 5 hour bike tours available.
Sailing
There is nothing quite like sailing in Kennebunkport to soak in the views of Maine’s coastline. You’ll see the rocky shores, lighthouses, and historic estates along Ocean Avenue.
Kayaking
Kayaking is a relaxing way to explore the coastal scenery at your own pace. I found many hotels provide kayaks for their guests.
Visit a Beach
We stayed in town, and Gooch’s Beach was just a 20-minute walk from our hotel. There is a large, sandy beach—the perfect spot to walk or lay out in the sun, but you can also experience the rocky coastline within a small area. Do research before planning your beach day, as some beaches are more rocky and have very limited parking.
Where to Stay in Kennebunkport
Grand Hotel
During our stay, we loved this hotel. Located in the heart of town, it’s just a few steps away from many restaurants and shops. Despite choosing one of their smaller rooms, we were surprised by the space and modern, updated bathroom. The bonus of complimentary bikes and kayaks made exploring the area easy. We didn’t have a chance to take advantage of it, but guests even have the option to use the pool at the sister hotel, The Yachtsman. Also, a continental breakfast is included.
The Yachtsman
Situated in the marina and conveniently close to Dock Square, The Yachtsman is a stylish motor lodge with a contemporary and nautical atmosphere. It even features a unique floating pool right in the river. Guests can enjoy a complimentary continental breakfast and bike, canoe, and kayak rentals.
The Tides Beach Club
Although The Tides Beach Club is about a 15-minute drive to town, this oceanfront hotel provides the perfect seaside getaway. It offers direct beach access to Goose Rocks Beach. Guests can also enjoy the amenities at the sister hotel, Hidden Pond.
Kennebunkport Inn
Located in the heart of town, The Kennebunkport Inn is the perfect blend of New England charm and coastal elegance. Its prime location makes it easy to explore the shops and waterfront. Guests can also access The Yachtsman’s pool, a complimentary breakfast, and bike and kayak rentals.
Where to Eat and Drink in Kennebunkport
The Boathouse
I heard a lot of hype about this restaurant and thought it might be overrated, but I was pleasantly surprised. Situated in the heart of town on the Kennebunkport River, the restaurant has a lively atmosphere, and the food is delicious. I had a glass of wine and shrimp tacos each time I went. While they don’t take reservations, you can put your name in for a table and walk around Dock Square while you wait. They’ll give you a call when your table is ready.
The Lost Fire
The Lost Fire offers a taste of Patagonian barbecue, featuring smoky, wood-fired flavors and a strong emphasis on meat. Reservations are encouraged.
Luca- The Lost Fire Patio
I loved this restaurant in Kennebunkport. It offers the same menu as The Lost Fire but on a bohemian patio in the woods. The ambiance was magical, with twinkling lights strung along the trees, Adirondack chairs circling a fireplace, and drinks being served out of a small barn. The food was excellent—I had a burger and fries while Tim had a filet. This restaurant is a must-try for anyone visiting Kennebunkport. Make reservations in advance.
Casa Seventy-Seven
Located in Cape Porpoise, a quieter side of Kennebunkport, where you can watch the fishing boats come and go. Inside, the restaurant has a modern vibe, but we sat at a bistro table outside, right by the water. I ordered a lobster roll and paired it with a limoncello spritz. It’s the ideal spot to enjoy coastal Maine.
Chez Rosa
Chez Rosa is a charming French restaurant in town and one of my favorite spots. The atmosphere is enchanting, with greenery draped across the walls and ceiling, French bistro chairs, and white marble tabletops. I started with a half-dozen oysters, but they were so fresh that I had to order six more. We also had French onion soup, steak frites, and crème brulee. Reservations are recommended.
The Spirit of Massachusetts
This historic ship is the perfect place for a drink and appetizer. We came here a few times and I always got The Sea Cucumber to drink and the prawns for a snack.
Rosella
A stylish, sustainable sushi restaurant in The Grand Hotel. We stopped here for a drink on their front porch and again for an appetizer. Reservations are recommended. To interact with the chef, request a seat at the sushi bar.
Old Vines Wine Bar
This relaxed wine bar with a cozy outdoor patio is the perfect destination for a pre-or post-dinner drink.
The Burleigh
Located in The Kennebunkport Inn, The Burleigh has a tavern-style menu. Although we didn’t have a chance to eat, we did have drinks and listened to live music on their outdoor patio.
